While I don't yet have a roll bar, I've investigated them many times, as I'd like to do some track days and most places require one.
Many would argue that a roll bar on any convertible is just about mandatory, but sadly if ever there was a car design which made an effective roll bar installation all but impossible, it is the Miata.
Assuming you're anywhere near 6 feet tall, you can't get a bar under either of the tops which would hit the ground in a rollover before your head did. Still, having one there would certainly maintain more space for you to (hopefully) survive in, and that's still a plus.
The BIG problem with putting any true roll bar in any Miata isn't really the lack of vertical space - It's the fact that you can't get it far enough behind you to get it away from your head. It's about the exact height of your head and just a few inches behind it, which means that in a rear end collision (and there are hundreds of times more of those than there are rollovers) there's going to be a secondary collsion inside the car - Your head with the bar.
Even if it's legally padded, it's still a steel pipe with 3/4 inch of foam around it, and I'd not care to have someone hit me over the head with such a device, let alone get hit with it at 60 MPH. For a track car where you're always wearing a helmet, I could justify it, but for everyday, with a 'naked' head . . . .
I've put off the purchase of one for years as I'm not sure that it would help me more than it would hurt me - If you stay right side up, it's unnecessary, and with a little care and common sense, you DO have something to say about that - You have much less to say about some fool rear ending you.
I just don't know . . . .
