The VIN number for the car is stamped on the engine on the passenger side just below the head. I can't remember the exact spot but it can be seen by standing on the passenger side with head under hood. useing the VIN you can determine the model of the engine. Go to the FAQ section here to figure out how to decode the VIN.

There is also an engine number stamped into the block on a protrusion from the cylinder head mounting surface at the right side rear of the engine. On some cars it is easier to read than others. It is not the VIN, however, and I have never heard if there is any way to cross reference between the VIN and engine numbers.

There is an engine number stamped into the block casting on a flat protrusion, even with the cylinder head mounting surface, sticking out from the right rear corner of the head (left side as you face the engine from the front of the car).
