Delenr?

Post by Anja »

"The 94-97 Miata's were famous and still are for bad air bag diagnostic units (code 51).
On the 94 it is located on a bracket up next to the steering column, under the dash, usually a blue box. Dealer price is about 183.00 and change. Plug and play, then two asprin for the back ache."

The air bag module is a plug and play module. The air bag light will come on solid after module replace but simply turning key back off and then restarting should initialize everything. The only thing that can cause the fuse to burn is either a shorted out D-sensor or wiring to one of the D-sensors shorted to ground.

Checking for this is a matter disconnecting the battyer, air bag diagnostic module and drivers air bag in the steering wheel (This step is to keep from accidentily deploying the air bag during the checks). Once all three are disconnecting it is just a matter of using an digital ohm meter and checking continuity of three wires at the diagnostic module. Do you have access to a digital ohm meter??

12 - Open circuit power source
13 - D sensor ON
21 - Poor installation S sensor
22 - S sensor ON
23 - Open connection S sensor feed circuit
24 - S sensor diagnostic circuit open
32 - Open circuit driver side airbag module
33 - Open circuit passenger side
34 - Short circuit driver side airbag module
35 - Short circuit passenger side
41 - Open circuit between D sensor and computer

***********
44 - Poor installation of right side D sensor
45 - Poor installation of center D sensor
46 - Poor installation of left D sensor
51 -
52 - Damaged back-up battery
53 - Damaged computer
Flashes continuously - Poor connection of all D sensors

Code 51 is:

The fuse specified is inside the airbag control module. Under the troubleshooting guide, the possible causes:

1. Blown internal fuse in diagnostic module.
2. Diagnostic module not replaced after service code 13 set and conditions corrected.
3. Intermittent short in air bag deployment circuit.

***********
Note #2. The D-sensors are the ones in front, one in the front center near the horns, the other in the fenders behind the plastic fender liner. It is possible the system is set so that if the D-sensor code goes on long enough, that the internal fuse in the diagnostic module will blow. The only way to tell is to remove the module & open it up.

On a good note, the diagnostic module on the '92 I picked up has a similar problem. I opened it up and one of the electrolytic capacitors had leaked. The good news is that when I called MazMart, a replacement module was only $75.
